BETTER AT HOME PROGRAM

Better at Home is a United Way program to help seniors (65+) with simple day-to-day tasks so that they can continue to live independently in their own homes and remain connected to their communities. The program is funded by the Government of British Columbia, managed by the United Way of the Lower Mainland, and services are provided by local non-profit organizations.

Volunteer Terrace offers friendly visiting and light housekeeping services.

  • Housekeeping: 1.25 hours of professional housekeeping support every two weeks provided through “Northern Home Care,” a fully accredited home health services agency.

  • Friendly Visits: the friendly visitor program helps isolated and vulnerable seniors establish a supportive connection to enhance the quality of their lives through friendly visits. We are seeking volunteers interested in being a companion for seniors.

Community Connector

Funded by United Way of Northern B.C, a Community Connector helps alongside many professions such as, case works and social workers. Support includes, help with certain forms, access to community programs, connections to in-home supports and advocacy.

The goal is to provide client-focused support to seniors in need, emotionally, financially, physically, and/or socially. Listening to stories, extending compassion and creating a safe space, they are able to assist in their setting of achievable goals to improve community connections and overall sense of well-being.

Social Prescribing

THE HELPING HANDYMAN PROGRAM

The Helping Handyman program provides support services to low income seniors and those with mobility challenges. Over the past 25 years, the Helping Handyman program has supported Seniors in projects such as building wheelchair ramps and changing light bulbs. The Handymen help keep seniors living in their homes. This program is supported by Northern Health.

SNOW ANGELS PROGRAM

Since 1991, Snow Angels has matched seniors with volunteers to shovel driveways and sidewalks. For many seniors and those with mobility challenges, snow brings worry about leaving their homes safely. In the past, Snow Angels has served up to 50 Seniors during the winter months, but the capacity of this program is reliant on the number of volunteers. This is a critical program and Volunteer Terrace seeks individuals, businesses, sports teams, schools, and other groups to support the Snow Angels program.

My Snow Angels have helped me so much over the years, I cannot imagine what I would do without one.
